Reporter Makori Ongechi is now a Fruits Vendor
Former Citizen TV news reporter Joshua Makoro Ongechi who was sacked early this year is now a fruits vendor.
In a twist of turns when most netizens thought he would have a job in another competitive media house, Ongechi chose a low-key profile job which he says is way better than his former TV Job.
Makori is believed to had begun his fruit vending side hustle while he was still an employee at Royal media Services not until he was rendered jobless.
Ongechi has been ordering fresh fruits such as bananas, avocados, and tomatoes from his homeland, Kisii.
However, Makori, like any other entrepreneur, gets up at 3:30 a.m. every morning to pick up his luggage from Kisii, which he then delivers to his customers, who subsequently sell it in the marketplaces. They finish distributing the fruits by 6:00 a.m. with the help of his assistants before moving on to other daily tasks.
Makori says that in his new business his life is better now than it was when he was at Citizen TV, wearing a tie and fitting suits. Apart from being able to easily pay his bills, he benefits from a flexible schedule, as he has the majority of his days free to pursue other interests.
The media personality was fired at the busiest media station for extorting journalistic sources. He allegedly demanded money from people in exchange for running or not running their tales.
Bright Kenya news revealed that he had been fired after a series of investigations into his previous work.
In a detailed letter by the station, Ongechi was served with a notice by management on February 8, 2021, followed by a disciplinary hearing on February 16, and March 9.
Ongechi had apparently put up a film for a 2020 airing in which he claimed West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo had an affair with a juvenile.
The video had gone viral on the internet, and the journalist had attempted to extort the governor with it.
The media house's investigations revealed that the story was false, resulting in the summons.
He was also accused of obtaining a video of SFS Integrated Primary School in Katani, Machakos County, which he allegedly exploited to extort the school.
According to the footage, the school was providing pupils with expired food.
Therefore, due to the results in both cases, the station had no choice but to fire the reporter.
"In these two hearing meetings, you admitted that you prepared the video in issue and that you went to the school as alleged. The disciplinary committee conducted its own investigations, took consideration of your submissions at the hearings and your admission that in retrospect what you did was wrong," the letter reads in part.
"The committee found your actions to be contrary to the company policy and clear gross misconduct contrary to the Employment Act. In line with the committee's findings the management has decided to terminate your services summarily with immediate effect as provided for in law," the termination reads.
